Listener Reviews & Comments Walter Wanderley could play the organ with the best of 'em (i.e., Jimmy Smith) He was a master at his craft, and became popular at just the right time. Born in Brazil, he was a learned pianist and musician early on in life, moved over to the organ and was entertaining regularly in Brazil. One Mr. Tony Bennett (you may have heard of him) caught Walter's act and rushed to Verve executive Creed Taylor with a few of Wanderley's albums in hand and insisted Taylor offer him a contract. After some convincing, Taylor did just what Tony asked and Walter recorded his first single for Verve, the infectious groove of SUMMER SAMBA. The rest, as they say is history. Here is a fine outing by Walter Wanderley recorded in the height of the bossa nova craze. Other bossa's that should be recognizable to the discerning ear are the Getz/Gilberto monster hit THE GIRL FROM IPANEMA and another Astrud Gilberto gem, BEACH SAMBA, both put to the test of a raging organ and throbbing charts very successfully here. Another standout here is IT'S EASY TO SAY GOODBYE, while a few other recognizable tunes, such as THE SONG OF THE JET (Sambo do Aviao) and the 60's staple CALL ME will also delight listeners. Fellow islander and superstar Antonio Carlos Jobim co-wrote the aforementioned SONG OF THE JET with the great Gene Lees; Jobim is represented again on this album with THE GREAT LOVE (O Grande Amor) This album is a nice change of pace for the music lover; the masses agreed back in '66; it went plantinum. Listen for jazz greats Urbie Green and Bucky Pizzarrelli throughout, although not as much as fans of theirs would like. An overall wonderful album....great artwork too!
