There is over an hour's worth of music on this generous LP, which features two different all-star groups at the 1963 Newport Jazz Festival. One band (with trumpeters Clark Terry and Howard McGhee, tenors Coleman Hawkins and Zoot Sims, pianist Joe Zawinul, bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Roy Haynes) could be considered more boppish than the other (which has trumpeter Ruby Braff, trombonist Al Grey, tenor Bud Freeman, pianist George Wein, bassist Wendell Marshall and drummer Haynes), but in reality, the groups overlap stylistically. The jam sessions (eight standards including ballad features for Hawkins and Terry and the original blues "Chasin' at Newport") are quite fun and generate plenty of heat. Historic and enjoyable music from quite a few classic greats.
