The self-titled 1969 debut by San Francisco ballroom favorite Santana singlehandedly brought Latin rock into the mainstream. I first heard this in high school, and I could not believe the musical depth. The emotions that sprang from the music worked its hypnotic spell on everyone in the room. I had never heard instruments sing this way: both in perfect harmony, yet with a biting edge that kept you wanting more. I immediately bought the album, and have treasured it ever since.
