The output of composer John Ireland (1879-1962) was relatively small; there are just ten chamber works in his catalogue. Of all Stanford's pupils, Ireland was the first to be put through a rigorous discipline of strict counterpoint involving study of the modes. These chamber works span more than half a century of John Ireland's creative life, with the Cello Sonata standing midway along its path.
