Listener Reviews & Comments
This is but one volume of the massive Time-Life "mail order only" Big Band series of a couple of decades ago which covered all the early greats, and if you can get your hands on one of these Harry James editions at the price being shown, go for it. Fast while they last. The sound reproduction is just excellent and in the fold-out insert you get 2 1/2 pages on his career and another 2 1/2 pages providing comments on each of the recordings included by Len Lyons, author of The 101 Best Jazz Albums: A History Of Jazz On Records. Also, there is a complete discography of the contents, including musicians involved, which range from 1939 to 1944. The tracks (with the year recorded shown in brackets and vocalist where applicable) are: 1) Ciribiribin (Feb. 20, 1939); 2) Foot Draggin' Blues (August 31, 1939); 3) It's Funny To Everyone But Me (August 17, 1939 with vocal by Frank Sinatra); 4) Concerto For Trumpet (Nov. 30, 1939); 5) Two O'Clock Jump (March 6, 1939); 6) You Made Me Love You (May 20, 1941); 7) I'm In The Market For You (Nov. 30, 1939); 8) Flight Of The Bumblebee (Feb. 13, 1941); 9) My Silent Love (Mat 20, 1941 with vocal by Dick Haymes); 10) Flash (Nov. 8, 1939); 11) Trumpet Blues And Cantabille (Feb. 24, 1942); 12) All Or Nothing At All (Aug. 31, 1939 with vocal by Frank Sinatra); 13) Back Beat Boogie (Nov. 30, 1939); 14) I Can't Begin To Tell You (August 20, 1945 with vocal by Ruth Haag - really Betty Grable); 15) Music Makers (Jan. 8, 1941); 16) I Had The Craziest Dream (July 22, 1942 with vocal by Helen Forrest); 17) Willow Weep For Me (Aug. 31, 1939); 18) I Don't Want To Walk Without You (Dec. 11, 1941 with vocal by Helen Forrest); 19) Cherry (July 22, 1942 with vocal by Helen Forrest); By The Sleepy Lagoon (Feb. 24, 1942); 21) I'm Beginning To See The Light (Boc. 21, 1944 with vocal by Kitty Kallen).
