Listener Reviews & Comments
This is the most delightful, rollicking, joyous, beautiful recording of music of this period I have ever heard, and I've heard a passel of them. And all on original instruments, but never acrid or vinegary as period-instrument performances usually are. Including some of the finest Sixeenth Century instrumental works, by the great Michael Praetorius, Erasmus Widmann, and J.H. Schein. The arrangements are exquisite. The performances are perfect. Beautiful and haunting and infectious in their joy. The famous works by Praetorius are all delightful -- the Volta that ends the suite rhythmically engaging-- the Widmann pieces-- charmingly each titled after women of his acquaintance (one surmises) -- different in personality but no less delightful-- the Schein suites as well. Out of the entire repertoire of recordings of this period, this recording is, to me, the very greatest-- and that even considering some very fine competition! To anyone who is unfamiliar with music of this period, this recording makes an utterly perfect introduction, and it will become a cherished part of your collection. Now, PLEASE, Boston Skyline, RE-RELEASE IT! This being out-of-print leaves a conspicuous, yawning gap in the catalogue!
