Listener Reviews & Comments Stellar, gorgeous ballad playing, "Chicago-tenor" swing less on the old-timey side than one might first think. Terrific mastering/recording. Imagine Coleman Hawkins with some more tone and grit and you've got it. The charts are actually quite advanced, mainstream settings not entirely unlike a more straightahead Oliver Nelson combo or something like that. Satin Doll combines some fat voicings with a sweet Basie groove. How Now suffers from an out of tune t-bone, but features Roy Eldridge getting in touch with his Rex Stewart side. Pucker Up is essentially straightahead hardbop. I always associated IJ with older styles since he was a contemporary with Louis, et. al. originally, but I picked this disc up in a bargain bin and then went out to find more of his albums immediately.
