New Music Reviews
Fight or Flight? by Kellylee Evans
Being from the Detroit area, I have always enjoyed the Ed Love show on WDET-FM, the local public radio station. Mr. Love taught me to fully appreciate the subtlety, strength, artistry, and sheer beauty of female jazz vocalists. Given that, it was with great anticipation that I loaded my CD player with the new release from Kellylee Evans. After a few listens, I realized that this is one the strongest debut albums from a female vocalist that I have heard in a long time. Unlike many debut albums which have a few originals sprinkled in with mostly cover tunes, all 12 tracks on Fight or Flight? were written and composed by Ms. Evans.
Starting with the title track "What about Me?", the melodies and lyrics are infectiously delightful. To all fans of modern female jazz vocalists like Diana Krall, buy this new debut album from Kellylee Evans. You will not be disappointed. When you get this CD, pay special attention to track 3 (I Don't Want You To Love Me) and track 10 (Enough), which are my two favorite tracks. - Terry Weadock - Jazzdigger.com
From This Moment On by Diana Krall
Ms. Krall is one of the few recent artists to transcend the jazz genre into popular music without losing sight of her roots. Her sultry smooth voice combined with the 11 jazz classics on this album may make this her best album yet. - Terry Weadock - Jazzdigger.com
Quick Response by Dom Minasi
Avante garde jazz is the feeling you will get from this latest release by guitar virtuoso Dom Minasi. Mixing standards like Cole Porters's What Is This Thing Called Love with original tracks by Minasi, this CD offers an exotic look at modern jazz. The cool tones of Minasi's guitar mixed with organist Kyle Koehler's keyboard arrangements, and alto sax harmonies by Mark Whitecage offer one Minasi's most accessible, yet satisfying releases yet.
