Terry (2:51). Recorded by the infamous Albert Goldman (of The Lives of John Lennon fame), The Last Mardi Gras is a phenomenal document of Professor Longhair's talents. The sound quality is impressive, but what truly puts the show over is Longhair's energy. Even at 59 years old, he still sounds as feisty as ever, unleashing torrents of piano grooves on "Mess Around," wailing mournfully on "Everyday (I Have the Blues)," and delivering one of the wildest versions of "Got My Mojo Working" ever performed. Backed by a solid band that includes a crack rhythm section and two sterling sax players, and surrounded by an enthusiastic hometown crowd, Longhair comes alive in a way that surpasses even his best studio recordings. (It's even more endearing to hear the Professor murmur a quiet, heartfelt "thank you" after each song.) The song listing is well-chosen, mixing impressive covers like "Stag-O-Lee" and "Jambalaya" with most of Longhair's best songs, including a version of "Bald Head" that rivals the original studio take. The Last Mardi Gras is as definitive a Professor Longhair album as any compilation
