Listener Reviews & Comments A fine romance jazz fans have with Ella can be reinforced by this CD, although this is not for the completists. The material is brilliant; well known songs, mostly written by Gershwin(s), Berlin, Porter and Rodgers and Hart, plus beautiful "Lullaby of Birdland" and, well, charming "A-Tisket A- Tasket" (actually, the song itself is corny, but, as opposed to Ella's original rendition, when she was young and undistinctive, this 50's version starts swinging with a latin beat and Ella uses irony (even at her own expense)to make the performance credible... The songs are taken from various sources (including the songbooks, a song from "Porgy and Bess" arranged by Russ Garcia, apparently a concert album as well...). All in all, these perfomances, when put together on this CD, give us a fine middle- of- the- road view of Ella's golden age. There is some pure jazz and jazzy tracks (particularly "Lullaby of Birdland" with a swinging combo and the performance of "Just You Just Me" with the brilliant Marty Paich's dek-tette; featuring Bud Shank and other mosters of the cool), some songs are pop bordering on kitsch, but even they don't bother me much. I love Ella, and this CD is jazzy enough for my taste. Finally, I adore this swinging and scatting version of Berlin's "Blue Skies", with "Sweets" Edison's muted trumpet in the background igniting Ella in the first several bars, before she flys high... And yes, Ella scats on several songs, but her rendition of lyrics is also quite interesting and often jazzy enough...
