Listener Reviews & Comments Charles Fambrough shows that his time in the Jazz Messenger's was well-spent, his compositions forging a possible future for jazz that does not embrace rap and hip-hop, or morph into dance or easy-listening, supermarket music. This may limit the audience to musicians and hard-core jazz fans, but that's o.k., hopefully there's still enough support to keep his type of musical integrity alive. As the title hints, most of these tracks have a blues accent, particularly "Blues for Bu", an obvious blues chord progression honoring "Buhaina" (Art Blakey) himself. Other Blakey alumni onhand here are altoist Donald Harrison and trombonist Steve Turre, who also lends the unique, haunting tone of his conch shells to "Andrea". Joe Ford, Bill O'Connell and Bobby Broom also get opportunities to display their talents, and the extremely clear recording allows Steve Berrios' chimes and other percussion to complement the soloists and Ricky Sebastian's rhythmic accents.
