Listener Reviews & Comments This is a delightful live CD, recorded at Birdland in NYC in 1990. Joining Sweets on the front line are two Basieites: Frank Wess and Buddy Tate. Wess particularly is a wonderful, warm tenor player, and he shines on Edison's blues composition CENTERPIECE and the standard IDAHO. Tate's Texas tenor gruffness comes through on JUST FRIENDS and OUT OF NOWHERE, and, of course, BLUE CREEK, a Tate original, is a clarinet feature for him (it's a slow blues and Tate plays it from deep within his axe, though the original version on Prestige is slightly better). Sweets is sweets, and has highlights all across the CD, especially on BAGS' GROOVE and the aforementioned CENTERPIECE. Hugh Lawson is at the piano, with Ray Drummond (b) and Bobby Durham (d) - as solid a rhythm section as you could find. This was an exciting evening of music at Birdland, and I'm glad Candid was there to capture it for all of us. It's a good one.
