Led by the soulful vocals of composer/keyboardist Adrian Sicam, "Funky Lover" has the pull and pop and the snappy structure (complete with Josh Stoltzfus' bluesy guitar break). Another hit is the Hathaway/Hudson cover "Tryin' Times," a stripped-down old-school funk piece spotlighting Theo's slap and drummer Jim Lucchese's steady syncopation. Penned by vocalist Kemp Harris, "Ruthies" is a simple gospel-ly number that uses a contemporary allegory of the biblical story of Ruth to warn against discrimination and bigotry. Neon Grandma is definitely creative and The Urban Goddess gives a varied view of what is surely a fun live set.
