I don't usually write reviews for CDs that are already out-of-print, but I'm going to make an exception to inform jazz customers of an amazing deal that is currently happening via one of Amazon's Marketplace vendors. The Fantasy label has unfortunately decided to remainder a large number of their Original Jazz Classics CDs, but thankfully Newbury Comics (based in the Boston area) has purchased an enormous selection of these titles, and is offering them at closeout prices. Some of these discs, like "Presenting Ernie Henry," are absolutely terrific! For those of you who don't know this underrated alto saxophonist, he is most widely known as one of the sidemen on Thelonious Monk's classic "Brilliant Corners," but he made only two albums as a leader (and another of posthumously released outtakes and alternates) before his untimely death at the age of 31 in 1957. This album is his first, cut at two sessions in August of 1956, and featuring a quintet of Henry, Kenny Dorham on trumpet, Kenny Drew on piano, Wilbur Ware on bass and Art Taylor on drums. Jazz devotees do yourself a favor, if you live in New England, go to a Newbury store and cash in on a once in a lifetime deal. If you live elsewhere, you can always have them shipped -- it'll be worth it.
