Listener Reviews & Comments
I feel guilty enough giving this CD 2 stars because I don't want to discourage the artists! I'm trying to be as diplomatic as possible. The things I enjoy most about the music are the innovative percussion, long 5-7 minute compositions, abstract structures, and style variability. Their attempts at being soulful have succeeded. It's normal that the percussion should be so good, as Roland Appel, a founding member of Fauna Flash and producer of the "New Sounds of Jazz" series, must have been a percussionist in his previous life. I wish more DJs could have as high of an appreciation of quality percussion as Mr. Appel does. However, like the "New Sounds in Jazz" volumes, Fauna Flash's "Fusion" (+ remixes), as well as Truby Trio's previous "DJ Kicks", this CD just does not have enough great moments (in my honest personal opinion) that would allow me to give it, say 3 stars. Don't get me wrong, when the T-Trio is on, it's really on. They've produced some really great tracks here: Universal Love, Runnin', Alegre 2003, Make a Move, Bad Luck, to name my favorites. However, the rest of the CD makes a huge drop-off in quality from the above-mentioned tracks. I feel that the remainder is quite an inferior product and can be quite unlistenable and boring for me, although still better than a lot of garbage out there. While "The Rhythm" (Parts 1 + 2) contains the best sample on the entire CD, it's too bad that TT couldn't do more with it than just an intro and outro. The sample of the guy's voice repeating the lines (see title of my review) is so annoying. But, seeing that some of the tracks are quite excellent and that no one can deny the talent of these guys, I just find my favorite tracks and make my own compilation. That's what I've done with the "New Sounds" series, as well as the previous Fauna Flash material. The result is 175 minutes across 3 CDs of great music that people love when I play it at my private parties. My advice to Truby Trio would be to keep putting out music, and try to find an executive producer that could help with many of the rough spots. The talent is there, but it's not clicking yet for a larger audience. The Compost label is a great start, though. Finally, I'm hoping for a new Fauna Flash CD - How about something produced outside of the confines of Munich this time, like Berlin, Paris, or Amsterdam? Get some fresh air.
