Customer Reviews and Comments
First of all let me say this is worth 4.5 stars, but not quite 5.This 2 CD 42 track album has a glorious selection of MGM film songs by an assortment od very famous artists. These tracks are truly from the golden age of film musicals, before TV spoiled it all.Even more interesting for me is the fact some of the early tracks are in stereo. There is an explanation for this, the original sound tracks were multi channel, but mixed down to mono for the films. However today, using new technology, these multi tracks can be digitally mixed and remastered into good quality stereo. At worst the tracks are mixed into reasonable qualiity mono, usually better than that obtained from 78's metal masters of the period.Examples of stereo are: I Got Rhythm form "Girl Crazy" 1943, fantastic performance and fantastic stereo sound, all 8 mins of it. Also If Swing Goes I Go Too Fred Astaire, Be A Clown, Honeysuckle Rose, Milkman Keep Those Bottles Quiet with Tommy Dorsey, As Time Goes By, Putting On The Ritz "sung" by Clark Gable 1939 !As far as I can tell, this album is identical to "Somewhere over the rainbow, The golden age of hollywood" it even has the same pics as well as the same track listing, so it's worth checking which is cheapest. If you want more of the same thing, try searching on amazon.com and .co.uk for things like "MGM" in the music section, there are lots of choices. Of Special interest is the 6 CD Box Set "That's Entertainment."Highly recomended--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
