Darren Barrett won the 1997 prestigious Thelonios Monk International Jazz Competition and is currently an Associate Professor of Ensembles at Berklee College of Music. Darren has performed and or recorded with Elvin Jones, Jackie McLean, Herbie Hancock, Jimmy Heath, and Antonio Hart. With his new release Wrenaissance Vol.1 he has change directions from his previous two releases that were straight ahead jazz to a sound best described as Hip-Hop, R'n'B, Funk, Fusion, Soul combined with Jazz elements. The result is amazing! All tracks written and produced by Darren Barrett. Donald Byrd, being his mentor, one can understand why Darren would eventually stretch out to groove oriented music. Donald is a forward thinking musician and has had great success in groove music (The BlackByrds, 125th Street). I commend Darren on this project and hope he will go even further with his explorations.
