Listener Reviews & Comments
Nif-Nuf recordings was started in 1999 to document the wonderfully swinging mainstream jazz music played by Australians and visiting Americans(mostly)at Bob Barnard's first Jazz Party weekend in Melbourne. It's now an annual April event and John Trudinger has done a stellar job of production over the years. Guests have included Ralph Sutton, Marty Grosz, Dan Barrett, Bob Havens, John Sheridan, Nikki Parrott, Evan Christopher, and (Canadian)Jim Galloway. All of the performances are first rate and showcase the visitors as well as introducing some phenomenal Australian talent...like George Washingmachine(violin). Other exceptional Australians to note include Chris Taperell on piano, Len Barnard-drums, Jo Stevenson-alto sax, John Scurry-guitar, Leone Heale-bass, Graham Coyle-piano, Peter Gaudion-trumpet, and Dan Barnett on the trombone. Bob Barnard's cornet and Danny Moss's tenor get my highest rating for their remarkable contributions on these well recorded discs. The music is mostly familiar material from the American songbook with some splendid Australian tunes thrown in for good measure. If you're looking to survey some of the exceptional music found on the Nif-Nuf label, try the 'Highlights' disc from this or any previous year. It's great stuff. * Chris Taperell, Len Barnard, and Danny Moss have all passed on. Fortunately they've left us with many enduring examples of their brilliant musicianship. You'll find much of it on these Nif Nuf recordings.
