Listener Reviews & Comments
This CD should get 6 stars on a 5 star scale. Banjo virtuoso John Bullard has put together a superb collection of Baroque pieces magnificently arranged for five-string banjo, with occasional accompaniment by other instruments, including guitar and cello. Dont misunderstand this is by no means a novelty album or a collection of bluegrass versions of the classics (not a bad idea in itself, actually). No, these are highly tasteful, straightforward renditions in which Bullard demonstrates beyond doubt that the banjo is a serious instrument that in the hands of the right musician can perform serious music and make it sound glorious. The 21 pieces include eleven by Bach and two each by Handel and Scarlatti. The Bach cuts include several two-part Inventions (#14, performed with a harp-guitar, is especially fine) and selections from the cello suites. The highlight of the CD, however, is Bachs Gavotte en Rondeau from the 3d Violin Partita, a technically difficult piece that Bullard pulls off with so much taste that it alone is worth the price of the CD. Incidentally, for those who may have previously bought the cassette version of this album, the CD contains several additional cuts and a different (and better) performance of the Gavotte. This CD should appeal to classical music devotees with open minds, as well as to banjo players in general. As one who has played (or tried to play) the five-string for over 30 years, I can testify that Bullards timing and tone are incredible, and that his arrangements are remarkable. But however one approaches it, this is simply beautiful music beautifully performed. Highly recommended without qualification.
