Listener Reviews & Comments
Sometimes road bands will call a band meeting to talk about something that affects all members. Very rarely is the bass player an active participant. In the case of the John Adams quartet the bass player (Adams) is the bandleader. He has crafted just the right environment where all participants feel comfortable. There is a great deal of beautiful music making here. Rarely do live jazz recordings have that ambience and relaxation that is absolutely necessary for good music making. You rarely hear the audience. The audience is to be praised for being quiet most of the time and being hip enough not to applaud for all solos. If a soloist is really doing his thing he should take the listener to a different plane, sometimes a different planet. Applause in the middle of a tune can break the spell cast by the musician. Applause after a solo is often perfunctory, given and accepted without any real thought. The real test of a guy's solo is how it evolves from what is going on "in the moment" and how it relates to the piece as a whole. So the time to applaud solos (or not) is after the piece has finished. These guy's music making transcends any undue attention to single voice. There are no superstars here, only gifted musicians who are allowed to play together, contributing towards the greater whole. Pros: The wonderful warm tone of John's bass. Drummer Ed Soph and John are in some sort of transcendental orbital equinox. It is uncanny how well they fit together and compliment each other. Trumpet player Dennis Dotson`s warm, generous sound is integral to the music making. Pianist Joe LoCascio's searching, provocative style spurs the group to different harmonic directions, within the established framework of the tune. Cons: CD is too short. The tunes are great. There is absolutely no fat here, just absolute music. Be forewarned that this is no jazz-party CD, or background music. It will require your complete attention and you will be rewarded greatly. Check out "You and the Night and the Music." The recorded sound is excellent. If I were planning on recording in the southwest part of the country I'd give these guys in Texas a call. This is John Adam's second CD as a leader and I can only hope for more frequent releases. This is very good stuff.
