Listener Reviews & Comments
"Windham Hill Sampler 1996" was a wonderful find that I purchased in the opening days and weeks of 1998 during a trip to Fredericksburg, Virginia. The CD almost perfectly captured the beauty and adventure of that wonderful trip now forever etched in my memory. Onto the music itself, this is an astonishing collection of 14 tracks from selected artists on the Windham Hill label and focuses on the latest artists up to this point when it was released in 1996. Torcuato Mariano's "Last Look" I was familiar with for a long time when I got this and have it on his sophomore album of the same name. My favorite song however could very well be the mournful classic that is "When The Snow Melts" by Phil Cunningham. I was only 15 when I first listened to it but I almost was in tears when I was done listening to it. Even though it's a major note song, sometimes major note songs can have a far more somber feel than a minor note song and this song demonstrates that. My other favorite is the haunting "The White Spirit" by French brother/sister duo Uman with the sister's almost surreal vocals and the various exotic musical elements all weaved into one of the best New Age classics of the 1990s. What happened to this duo? I would've loved to have heard more albums after this. Other songs that stand out are "Jenny's Room" by Andy Narell.
