Throughout the 1920s, Art was growing up in Chicago in the heartland of the burgeoning new music that was sweeping America. He was perfectly at ease on the South Side. However, nearly twenty years were to pass before his own reputation spread outside the Windy City. His move to New York sparked a new career that made him an ardent propagandist for early jazz. His playing graced countless record sessions over the decades and this solo piano album, (together with Pagin' Mr Jelly, also on Candid) was one of the last he made.

Listener Reviews & Comments I first heard Art Hodes piano works in the 1960s, and his funky, hesitating style was an influence on me and a reason I wanted to learn to play. He recently came to my attention through some link at Amazon, and I bought 3 of his cds. This is is my favorite...recorded when he was in his 80s, and at the perfection of his style. The songs are piano solos, no words or other instruments, which allows the listener to really concentrate on each note, and particularly his sense of timing. A real treat!
